UK universities are keen to help students grow and develop as global citizens. One of the ways they do this is by encouraging students to participate in student societies. At some institutions a space for this is timetabled across the whole university - it may be one afternoon each week. Some students create their own societies around cultural or sporting activities that they have an interest in.

Differences between teaching methods in the UK and students' country

Consider how teaching methods in your country are different to teaching methods in the UK, and how you might prepare for this? The UK has a range of different teaching methods which are, in many cases quite different from what students have experienced. We should help students prepare for this by running pre-departure sessions that cover topics such as plagiarism, problem-based learning, and independent thinking. UK institutions work very hard to ensure that students have the tools to succeed academically. Providing resources ranging from induction events for international students, and academic support as part of their offer.

UK Programs and Teaching Methods

Some universities might deliver their courses in a very traditional, some might say, old fashioned kind of way, which has its place. Lectures, independent reading, lots of essay writing. But there are many universities that are doing problem-based learning, that are teaching through internships and they have very practical elements inside them as well. It’s therefore really important as a councilor to understand how is a student going to be successful? What style of teaching is going to work for them? Students are expected to research, prioritise their work, write essays and undertake practical work, discuss different opinions, support their arguments with examples, and give presentations.

Support for students during Covid-19

Universities are delivering high-quality teaching in academic year, 2020/1. Many universities are adopting a hybrid approach to teaching, with many classes being taught in-person but with some elements remaining online. All UK universities are regularly reviewing teaching in line with the latest public health guidance. Information on learning support can be found on institutions’ websites. At most universities, the international office encourages students to take advantage of these services as part of their orientation and induction. In your counselling role it’s important to help students find out how they can access these support services.

Accessing employability support in UK

A qualification from the UK is pretty much accepted anywhere in the world. It’s accepted everywhere, it opens the door to go wherever I want. The best thing I like about being in the UK is the confidence gained through this experience. I’m really pleased that I made the decision to come and study in the UK because, it has completely shaped up into what I really wanted from an experience, now as a result of choosing to study in the UK, I feel like I’m more highly employable, which I wouldn’t have been if I was studying elsewhere because of the experience I have gained from this journey. Most institutions will have a careers service. Their website (like Uni Salford) gives more information about the services they offer.

Skills for employability by study in the UK:
Graduate employers are reportedly looking for ‘transversal skills’ when recruiting. Such skills include being open to new ideas and curious about new challenges, as well as confidence, problem solving and tolerance towards the values and behaviours of others. While studying abroad, many international students, both undergraduates and postgraduates, expect their course to make them more employable on their return home and agents are likely to face many more questions about this aspect of university programs than ever before. Find out more about how UK universities equip students with the best skills to help them in their career on the Study UK website.
